For the past 50 years or so the CIA has been coming up with creative ways to assassinate Fidel Castro. Besides the classic exploding cigar, one of the most unusual plots involved Castro’s favorite sport, scuba diving. The plan (which was never actually implemented) was to place a bomb inside of a conch shell. The brightly colored bomb shell (no pun intended) would be placed near one of Castro’s favorite diving spots. He would be intrigued enough to pick up the shell and then… game over.
The shell that was to be used was a king helmet conch. I keep one of these (minus the bomb, of course) on my fireplace mantel. It’s a constant reminder to me that distractions and diversions can be dangerous. I have a million hobbies, I’ll be the first to admit it. They keep me occupied and help take my mind off the stresses of daily life. The danger occurs when I get to involved with my hobbies and lose focus of what’s truly important.
