It has been a crazy month. Between school starting back up, the post holiday let-down, a busy work schedule, and the viruses that keep cycling through our family it’s been hard to stay positive. This got me thinking about 7 Up. Why? Because until 1950, this popular soft drink contained the mood enhancing drug lithium citrate. I have an old bottle of 7 Up and I get a kick out of it every time I look at the ingredient list on the back.
Considering that we’re commanded to “be of good cheer,” does that mean that we should always be happy? If so, I’m going to have to find an old stash of 7 Up and start chugging. But I don’t think the Lord meant that we have to go around pretending that life is always just peachy. Sometimes life is rough and horribly unfair and He certainly knew that better than anyone.
But even though our temporary circumstances might be difficult, we should never give in to despair. He told us to be of good cheer because He had overcome the world. He paved the way so that if we follow in His footsteps and make it through the trials and tribulations of this life we can have hope of a better world to come.
I don’t pretend to understand why each of us have the precise trials we do, but I trust that God tailors them to us individually to help us grow and that He will never give us more than we can bear – as long as we rely on Him.
